Crayon Pop to perform for 30 minutes on Lady Gaga’s concert + reason why first album postponed

The five Korean girls who swept the K-pop scene last year are about to have another taste of fame.

Crayon Pop, whose music video of the song “Bar Bar Bar” went viral on YouTube SaveFrom.net last year, will open for Lady Gaga on her North America tour, which begins late June and runs for about a month, the chief executive of the group’s label said.

“The girls didn’t believe it at first,” Hwang Hyun-chang told The Wall Street Journal. “In February, Ellin (one of the members) had written down as a wish, during a TV show, that she wants to be famous enough to perform on the same stage with Lady Gaga.”

“Fans are buzzing that her dream had come true,” Mr. Hwang said, adding that the release of the group’s official first album has been postponed so they can join Lady Gaga’s tour.

A tweet on Lady Gaga’s official Twitter account announcing the Crayon Pop news has been retweeted more than 7,500 times. Lady Gaga has 41.1 million followers on Twitter.

Mr. Hwang said Crayon Pop’s act will last about 30 minutes. The girls will do the popular “Bar Bar Bar” song, where they jump up and down in a straight line mimicking the movements of a five cylinder engine. The group will also perform its soon-to-be-released song, “Uh-ee.”

Orange Caramel find kindred spirits in Crayon Pop

Though they originally debuted as a side-project from three members of the K-pop girl group After School back in 2010, Orange Caramel have been red hot recently.

On March 24th’s episode of the KBS radio show “2 O’Clock With Jo Jung Chi And Harim,” the three Orange Caramel band members Raina, Nana and Lizzy compared themselves to another group who took off all of a sudden, the viral video sensation Crayon Pop.

“We want to be wild and crazy like Crayon Pop," Lizzy said, responding to a question about which group Orange Caramel saw as their main rival.

Yet, according to Raina, their band gets lopped in with Crayon Pop whether they like it or not.

“We’re often mentioned alongside Crayon Pop in news headlines. We never thought of them as our rivals, but I guess people put us side-by-side because we have similar concepts." Raina said.

Lizzy added that though she and her bandmates have crossed paths with Crayon Pop, who are slated to open for Lady Gaga during her North American tour this summer, they aren’t close.

“We met the Crayon Pop members once before, but we don’t know them personally," she said.

Crayon Pop thinks they’ll mesh well with Lady Gaga

Korean pop newcomers Crayon Pop are set to make waves again after Lady Gaga announced the quintet will open for her on her upcoming North American tour.

The young Koreans shot to fame with the viral music video for “Bar Bar Bar.” Their signature move for the video was alternating jumps in a straight line.

The performers, dressed in red skirts and white helmets, believe their uniqueness will go well with Lady Gaga’s style.

“Just like Crayon Pop, Lady Gaga has a lot of unique performances and clothing, and I think that is very special. Our members’ favorite song is Poker Face." said Choa.

Apart from rehearsing for the tour, which opens in late June, Crayon Pop will be working on improving their English.

“We are learning and practicing English. We are preparing to show you more of our unique style." said Gummi.

Crayon Pop was in Hong Kong on Sunday to meet fans and perform.

Lady Gaga initially asked Crayon Pop to open up for all of her concerts

Korean girl band Crayon Pop will open an upcoming North American tour by Lady Gaga to promote her third album “Artpop" released in November last year.

The five-member girl band attracted Gaga’s attention when she came across their music video by chance during a break from practice.

Although Gaga initially asked Crayon Pop to open all 29 concerts in the North American tour, they could only agree to one month as they had prior commitment to work on their new album.

This is not the first time that a K-pop musician has drawn Gaga’s attention. She made a surprise appearance at the K-pop Night Out event at South by Southwest, the biggest rock festival in the U.S., in Austin, Texas, on March 11. She was reported to have been asking around when Hyun-a of a K-pop girl group 4minute would take the stage.

One of Gaga’s best friends is chef Bo-kyung O’Connor, who was adopted from Korea as a child. They went to middle and high school together in New York.

Gaga was spotted in an understated pink dress in June last year when she was one of the bridesmaids at Bo-kyung’s wedding.

Crayon Pop had to use mind control for their performances

Crayon Pop revealed that it has implement mind control for its unique performances.

On March 28, Crayon Pop attended the showcase for its fifth single Uh-ee at Olleh square in Jongro gu.

Like Crayon Pop’s other hits, the new song Uh-ee featured the members engaging in unique dance moves as they sang to the song, which mixes electronic with trot.

About its unique performances, Choa said, “Since our performances are different than the other girl groups, we need to have mind control. I think we can be more confident because there are five of us. People like it when we get into the performance because we don’t try to look pretty. No member really tries to be pretty.”

Soyul said, “We used to point out each other’s facial expressions before but now we don’t. We naturally stopped trying to look pretty.”

Meanwhile, Crayon Pop will begin promoting its new song through Mnet’s M COUNTDOWN-No. 1 Artist of Spring 2014 airing on April 3.
