The Friendship between Lee Kyung Young And Kim Min Jong
Lee Kyung Young is one of Minjong’s best friends even though their wide age gap of about 11 years. They have been friends for 20 years. They say they seem to be like blood brothers. Min Jong also has many other friends who are like brothers to him. In 1996, Min Jong performed for no money in Lee Kyung Young’s movie “Gui Chon Do”/ “The sad path to return to heaven”. Lee just set up a film company. It was this film company’s first movie and Min Jong wanted to help him. Min Jong only took US$10 (yes.....US$10 only) as guarantee fee but he still put in his best to film this movie. For the sword-fighting scenes, he learnt swordsmanship for 5 months and his hands were all blistered. During actual filming, he NG only 2 times. Because it’s an ancient movie and the weather was so hot, the filming process was very tough. For this movie, Min Jong lost 6kg of weight. In that year, Min Jong was the winner of The Most Popular Star award and he had even better movie offers but he gave them all up for Lee’s sake. This is because Lee was like a master to Min Jong’s life and acting career. When Min Jong just started his career in the entertainment scene, Lee Kyung Young took good care of him like an elder brother. Min Jong is someone who never forgets people’s help to him. During filming of the movie "Gui Chon Do", an accident happened which made him almost one-eyed. It was a confrontational scene with him surrounded by 5 warriors. He got his body out of the way a little late, the next moment he saw the sword flashing before his eyes and blood oozed out of his left eye. The staff members screamed “Ah”, ran to Min Jong and after checking the 2-cm wound, they all heaved a sigh of relief. Because the filming expenditure of “Gui Chon Do”/ “The sad path to return to heaven” exceeded the budget, Lee’s film company faced financial trouble and bankruptcy risk. To save Lee’s film company, Min Jong performed in Lee’s movie “The Last Defence Cop” again in 1997. Although Min Jong knew that the movie was not good for his image, he still acted in it because he wanted to save Lee’s film company. This movie was filmed in Philippines and it was so hard to Min Jong because of the hot weather.
End of year 2001, with extremely busy schedules and sleeping less than 2 hours a day, Min Jong still squeeze time to act in Lee’s movie “Beauty in the dream” (a small part) for no money again.
PS: Following Lee’s sex scandal, Min Jong still remained as his friend although at first, Min Jong also cannot believe that Lee had done such a thing but Min Jong is not the kind of person who forsakes his friends when they are having a hard time. He bailed Lee out and during that period, he gave Lee emotional and mental support. Min Jong believes in forgiving someone’s wrong and in this case, he forgave Lee’s wrong. Even though Min Jong was so busy filming movie “Family” at that time, he still attends every Lee’s court hearing and even took air flights to his hearings when they were held in other cities outside Seoul. When Lee was initially sentenced to a 2-year jail sentence, Min Jong wrote appeal letters on Lee’s behalf to ask for judge’s pardon. As such, the judge lifted the sentence and put Lee on a 2-year probation instead. Lee also performed public service for 10 months.

Min Jong is so kind and gentle. I never saw anyone who hates him. It is not easy to achieve this in the entertainment world because this kind of lifestyle always makes critics. Min Jong is always the same and he never changes. He always emphasizes friendship, and he also try to keep what he said and promised. When I met him first time, I thought he was so handsome boy. He was polite and had a pair of lively eyes. From that time till now, we still have a very good relationship with each other even though we are so busy and can only meet each other maybe only once a year. Sometime ago, Min Jong called me and said he went to the small Buddhist temple in Mt. Sorak and prayed for me and that my movie “Beauty in the dream” would be a success. Sometimes he seems like an elder brother to me because he teaches me a lot. I usually don’t like someone to touch my hair, but Min Jong is an exception. He is very close and important person to me.
If it is said the happiest thing is to have three true friends in one’s life. But if I can only have one true friend, then that is enough for me and that friend is Min Jong.
Below is the best example to show the intimate relationship between Min Jong and Kyung Young.
One day, Min Jong was so tired and gloomy. Therefore, he called Kyung Young to have a drink with him, but he didn’t answer and there was just a voice mail. However, it was so impressive to Min Jong. The background music of voice mail is Min Jong's song; "Under the Sky" and there was Kyung Young’s words, which is "This song is the song of my best brother Min Jong who I love so much in this world" Kim Min Jong is such a great person to friends that people said Kim Min Jong knows the way to love friends.
Examples: During year 2001, one good friend who is like an elder brother to Min Jong suffered poor business in his restaurant due to US911 attack. This friend was beside Min Jong when he was feeling down so Min Jong wanted to help this friend back. He acted as a live advertisement to go to this friend’s restaurant twice/thrice a week to have meals even though he had such a hectic filming schedule and slept less than 2 hours a day. Min Jong’s actions even touched his other good friends. Friends like Cha In-pyo, Song Yoon Ah, Song Hae Kyo and Yoon Da Hun also followed his actions and became the restaurant’s regular customers.
In early 2001, one of Min Jong’s friend film company went bankrupt and Min Jong was his guarantor. Min Jong had to appear to settle the debts, paying off a huge fortune but he said he couldn’t hurt their friendship because of money.
It’s precisely Min Jong’s “too good” personality that fans in Korea really worry about. Min Jong treats everyone so good but not all people are nice. However, it is also because of Min Jong’s good personality that his fans never forsake him. Many of them love him for more than 10 years.
His eyes
In korea, among so many stars, people considered Kim Min Jong as the star with the most lovable eyes. There’s something attractive about his particular eyes. How strange that those eyes look so warm and kind. Because of that, he takes the wide popularity and top support in showbiz. Looking into his warm-hearted eyes, they bring solace to this rough world.
Natural Good Looks
Min Jong does not have cosmetic surgeries on his face. His good looks are natural, his big deep-set eyes and beautiful high nose are like his mother's. And his side-profile is an art. Because of his fine-looking delicate features, Korean people consider he has a western-looking face.

Young Min Jong
When Min Jong was a small kid, his family was rich. His father was a movie actor in his young days and subsequently became a movie producer, however his movies flopped, so his father lost a huge fortune in movies. Min Jong’s mother graduated from Seoul University (South Korea's No. 1 University) majoring in English Literature and planned to further her studies overseas. If she had gone for her studies overseas, she would have become an English professor but she met Min Jong's father and decided to marry him and stay in Korea. To Min Jong's father, movies came first before his family and he was never at home. Min Jong's mother could not take it anymore and wanted to leave his father. So, his father gave up his dreams of becoming a movie producer and started a brick factory in Songnam. But the business didn't do well and the brick factory had to be sold when Min Jong entered the second year of middle school. To make matters worse, Min Jong’s father was also guarantor for a friend’s company. When this friend’s company went bankrupt, Min Jong’s father paid a big fortune on his behalf and their family became very poor.
At the age of 14, Min Jong experienced poverty and hunger. And they seemed like the family who moved house the most number of times in the whole of Korea. Although Min Jong tried to endure those hard times, it was still too hard for a 14 year old boy and he thought of running away from home. Recalled by his mother, we were living in a one-room unit in front of a restaurant then. Min Jong came to me and said, "Mom, I want to run away from home," giving me advance notice! I told him, "No, you can't do that. I won't be able to take it when I find out the next day that you're gone!" Min Jong wasn't the kind to run away without a reason; he would tell me in advance that he was running away.
Min Jong was able to live in a house like a house for the first time at the age of 25. He moved in to stay with his parents a year ago.
Towards Min Jong, her youngest son who has provided an actual home not only for himself, but for the entire family, she always feels sorry for him whenever she needs to wake him up, because he does not have enough sleep due to his hectic schedule. There were also several occasions when Min Jong overworked, fainted while filming and was sent to hospital. Mother and son have become each other's reason and pillar of strength to continue living in the world. On the day that Min Jong moved into this house, he turned on the hot water and burst out crying loudly. This is a house he has put together entirely from his own hard work, after 8 years of acting. All this was only possible because he didn't give up hope and kept working hard. Min Jong's mother is always grateful to her youngest son, who is strong and never gives up.
(Explanation: The day Min Jong moved into the house, he turned on the hot water and cried loudly. There are so many people in Korea who don't own the houses they live in, so they pay rent in annual payment or monthly payments; the better off among these people have enough money to pay the lump sum for one year, so they don't have to worry about paying the rent until next year. Min Jong's family lived in those lower-quality houses where they had to pay the rent monthly. Very often, these houses are heated by a boiler that is run by oil, so the heat travels via the pipes beneath the floor (ondol) to warm up the floor, and also gives hot water during winter. People usually telephone the shop that supplies the oil and a man would come on a motorcyle. He comes into your house, goes to where the boiler is, unscrews the cover and pours the oil in. You can tell him you want 20,000 won worth of oil and he will pour the oil in. If you are poor, you won't be able to top up the oil, there is no more oil in the boiler, so icy cold floors and freezing water! When water freezes up in the pipes, so you don't get any water when you turn on the tap in the morning. And the ice cause the pipes to expand so much that they burst. Then the unfortunate family who lives in that house would have to install new pipes (additional repair cost) and these pipes may crack up parts of the flooring when they burst, so the family would also have to repair the cracked flooring. So you can imagine how many winters Min Jong had to suffer with icy cold floors and cold water that he became so emotional when he moved into the new house and experienced the convenience and luxury of hot water from the tap for the first time. He must be using a gas boiler heater now (gas heaters are more common nowadays) and paying for gas supplied by the government).
From rich to poor, a young Min Jong already experienced them all. So he understands the hardship of being poor, even though after he became rich and famous, he never forget the days of being poor and he also never forget those poor people who needs people’s help.
So, he often donates his earnings to charities but he does not want to make it known.

This is a secret which I only knew. When Min Jong accumulated good deeds, he never tells anyone and he donates money using his mother’s name and not his name. Reporters like to research about his good jobs and when they asked Min Jong, Min Jong would say: “I didn’t do that, it’s my mother who did that. Let’s not talk about this anymore.” He don’t want people to know and so his fans knew about his good deeds too late.
A filial son
In real life, Min Jong is a filial son. It is said that no matter how busy is his filming schedule he will find time to return home to have meals with his parents....and since he starts work, all his earnings are given to his parents.
Min Jong's relationship with his father is a very close one, it is not just a "father/son" relationship but they are close friends too. Min Jong's father loves football and Min Jong would often accompany him and travel to other countries to watch football matches that are held there. Min Jong's father is supportive of his decision to study acting and to go into the entertainment world and Min Jong is grateful for his support. When his father passed away in June 2005 due to lung cancer, it makes him realises the importance of health, he has since then cut down on his drinking. These days, when he is out with his friends, he would only consumes a bottle of soju that's all. He feels that since he is still young he has to take care of his health and he would also advises his friends to drink less soju and more tea instead.
When he was young, there was a few times when he drank with friends the night before and went filming late the next day but how, he has become a senior, he realised this is an ugly sight to his juniors. So, now he never come late for filming. He takes responsibility and sets himself as a good role model for his juniors.
A symbol of “Wueri”(loyalty)
After performing on a 1991 movie soundtrack(White Rainy Day), Kim Min Jong began part of a duet called ‘The Blue’ with actor Son Ji-chang. “The Blue” was a highly popular singing duo then and they had a score of hit songs. In 1995, “The Blue” was invited by Sony as the “priority singer in 1995 promotion” on a worldwide commercial campaign. Also invited were world-class singers like Michael Jackson, Michael Bolton and Mariah Carey. They could release album and do promotion at anywhere in the world and they have Sony’s active supporting. But Min Jong gave up this chance that may make him become a world singer. It was because of “wueri(loyalty for friends)”. He couldn’t bear to leave the company whom its manager had helped him through the hard times. Min Jong’s mother said: “It is reasonable that you take things step by step now. You are young and you will make a profit at any time later.” Min Jong took her advice and stayed with the old company but Son Ji Chang went on to sign an exclusive contract with Sony. So, “The Blue” was dissolved. Korean newspapers said: Wueri became a disadvantage for Kim Min Jong in some aspects but it is also this reason why people love his personality because nowadays, hardly any people practice “wueri” anymore. When Min Jong meets his fans, his fans likes to shout “weuri”. So, Min Jong has to say “weuri” in response and so “Weuri” became a fan slogan between Min Jong and his fans. In Korea, Min Jong’s wueri is so famous that even kids run after him and yell wueri.
His singing career
After “The Blue” was dissolved, Kim Min Jong started his solo singing career. His 3rd individual album was released and it gained a cyclonic popularity. His song sweeps over the top place of all ranking charts and stayed at No. 1 for several weeks, it seems that nobody can beat him. Then a terrible thing happened. The composer of Min Jong’s 3rd album, Seo Young Jin was found to have copied part Japanese melody and applied in Min Jong’s song. At first time, Min Jong had no idea of it until a fan told Min Jong. The composer refused to take responsibility for it. This matter received harsh critics from the media and the public because this was regarded as a dishonourable thing. Min Jong felt that he needed to give an answer to the incensed media and public so he made a very serious decision, a decision which was so harsh to himself…he announced that he shall stop singing.
At the age of 25 and at the top of his singing career, this was a terrible blow to him and one of the most painful moments of his life. Min Jong’s decision shocked the the whole korea entertainment scene. Everyone said it’s not Min Jong’s fault, why he has to take responsibility for someone’s wrong. But because taking responsibility is such a tough thing to do, until now, people still remember him as a brave and honest man. However, many people wanted to see him back singing. Many composers wrote songs for Min Jong and then they sent to his agent over 100 songs and they said the songs were written especially for Min Jong,. Min Jong was very impressed and touched, so he made his comeback in 1998 with his 4th album, that time, the pop market was not good and many singers sold little albums, many people wonder whether Min Jong can make a good comeback, but his 4th album was a sensational hit when released. In later time, the producer of his comeback album got married, when they opened Min Jong’s packet, they were so shocked, Min Jong gave him a gratuity of US$10,000! Most people will give about US$50-100 only. Min Jong never forget people who have helped him before.
During his Sweetheart 2000 concert, he couldn’t fight back his tears while singing “Gui Chun Do Ae”(the theme song of his controversial 3rd album) as he recalled the painful experience that he went through. Minjong has released many successful albums and many people commented that he's a great singer. So, it's a big surprise to know that in the first place he never thought of becoming a singer.
He revealed: "Yes. I loved music but I didn’t think of becoming a singer. When I was filming “White Rainy Day” I went to Karaoke with the director several times. He heard me sing and said to me, “You are a good singer. How about singing a film score?” Then I succeeded as “To You Chocolate” CF model after Leslie Cheung and Andy Lau. One of the clause in the contract was to sing “To You” CF song. So I asked my senior Mr. Seo Young Jin, who wrote the film score before, and I said to him “I have to sing ‘To You’ song. Can you write a song for me?” I was told by my company “You are a good singer. You have good reputations. Why don’t you release an album?” Senior Young Jin also tried hard to persuade me and having drinks with him every night, I was flattered by his words. That’s how I released my first and second albums. The making of 8th album saw Min Jong and Seo Young Jin working together again. Min Jong revealed:" because “帰天道愛” (The sad path to return to heaven) was Seo's plagiarized work, I didn’t meet him for three years after that. In the meantime, I realized that it’s not right to treat him in this manner, because it’s all because of him that I started my singing career. So I changed my mind and let him produced my 8th album. I haven’t release any new album after that. Now he had migrated to Canada. If I didn’t meet him, I would have only sang the “To You” song.
From this incident, we can see Min Jong is a big-hearted person who is able to forgive someone's wrongdoing. We have to say "what a BEAUTIFUL heart Min Jong has".
Kim Min Jong (At 1998 Concert celebrating the success of his comeback album)
I’m easy on stage. In my senior year at school festival, I will get on stage and sing with a guitar on my shoulder even though my friends are falling down with laughter. Having a nice figure with strapping height of 180cm, pure-white skin and clear-cut features, he seems like a prince on a white horse.
But that day, he has a fever and cold. His health condition was so bad that he needed to take an injection of Ringer’s solution. In spite of that, he still got on the stage. It was a good feature of a very professional singer who will get on stage even if he is not in good condition. Even if he’s too sick, he will sing on the stage till he falls down. He wants to do his best for the fans who came to his concert.

I went to the waiting room and I saw minjong taking ringer’s solution. I worried about him but I’m proud to see him doing his best on stage. I like this friend very, very much.
**Park Jin Young(Korean singer): Minjong is good at singing and acting but most of all he is the man of purity. For that reason, I like him. Come on, Cheer up, Do your best till the end.
**You Yeul(Korean Singer): He brought cake with 5 candles for minjong to congratulate his solo concert in 5 years. Minjong is a warm-hearted man. When I held a charity concert, he donated $1,000,000won but nobody knows it. Though younger than me, he always give me an impetus. So I’ll like to come and celebrate without fail.
