Roberto Di Matteo will make a decision on the fitness of David Luiz ahead of today's game in Swansea, having spoken highly of the Brazilian's abilities in the lead-up to the game.

The 25-year-old central defender was widely described as at fault for Manchester United's second goal in the midweek cup game but Di Matteo sees beyond the odd mistake when assessing a player.

David Luiz has been selected for eight out of the nine league games this season despite some strong competition for a place in the centre of the defence, although he is rated doubtful for today's game with an ankle injury.

'You need to see both sides because on one hand you a have a fantastic player who can decide games for you and on the other you need to take into account that everybody can make mistakes,' Di Matteo argues.

'We want our defenders to play, to be involved when we are attacking. I know more focus is put on the mistakes but David Luiz scored a fantastic free-kick against Nordsjaelland and other important goals for us.

'You need to be able to take the best out of the players and I will never restrict his qualities and he is a fantastic player for us. Certainly we are working on the fact that in certain moments it is better to play it simple, but he is a player with great qualities and he has decided many games for us as well.'

Should David Luiz not make today's game then with John Terry suspended, Branislav Ivanovic will move across to a position he has played many times, including at international level, emphasising squad strength.

'David Luiz and Gary Cahill are playing together very well and JT is here as well, and Ivanovic is a very good centre-back too,' says Di Matteo. 'We have good options.'
