Wrote by Chanka90 After <Moon>, you finished acting in <71 into the Fire> and you start acting in a drama <Athena: The Goddess of War>. Is the reason to continue to act in superproductions that you want to raise your value as an actor or a star?
Mr. Cha: I don't deny that. It's quite lucky to participate in a a movie on a big budget. I cannot do that artificially just because I want to do it. It's different to do a small work after finishing a big one from doing a series of small works. However, first of all, I like the planning of all of them. <Moon> has power of a brand as a traditional movie produced by the director Lee, Jun-ik. <71 into the Fire>, which memorizes 60 years after the Korean War, cannot be made any more. <Athena> is a drama on the biggest budget in the TV history. I love to participate in this sort of works as an actor. I think that I will not be swayed by this big project. If I was in thirites, I would be distracted. It's the same as Jung, Woo-sung. The works we particiapted in cost lots of money, but it's nothing to do with us. My age is not the one of being swayed by these physical things.
However, as a matter of fact, viewers cannot feel the blockbusters of billions of dollars. Instead, the one to attract viewers' interset was the combination of casting of Cha, Seung-won and Jung, Woo-sung.
Mr. Cha: After publishing the article, the reaction is very good. 9.5 people out of ten like it. I really appreciate their expectation to us although it becomes a burden to me as well. I work facing the public, so it will be sad if they are not interested in me.
You have been working without taking a rest for recent several years. What are you doing when you take a rest without work?
Mr. Cha: I'm just staying at home. I'm not doing anything special. I did the dishes, too....There are some people who think that I'm not doing any housework, but they misknow me. (laughing)
However, the actor, Cha, Seung-won, have been making your image, deliberately excluding this homelike image.
Mr. Cha: I read a writing of a blog about 5 years ago. Its title was "I call on Cha, Seung-won." The content of the writing were as follows. "I want Mr. Cha not to do acting unmatchable to him any more. Your face gives an image of war and you cannot hide it. You can survive with just acting this image." When I was reading this, I thought "What is the image of war??" But, I think that it was right. It was maybe the time of acting in <The Boarder of the South>. I took the opposite role, according to the writing. So, recently I always say that "Now, I am just like myself and I love it.." People see me as an image I think of.
Definitely, your activity is the most active now and you get greater power by activley showing the image of yourself the public want to see.
Mr. Cha: I don't know what I will act in the future. However, it's the image which comes up to people's mind when they think of the actor. I have never thought of how to make my image in detail but I think that I should act like my appearance and I shold go as I think. Also, it's better to add meeting good people. It's very important for me to meet good people.
However, it's not easy to meet good poeple in the entertainment industry where so many people are gathering and scattering. It will be important to have a vision which can recognize good people.
Mr. Cha: Um, a good person is...I don't know about women (laughing)... In terms of men, good men are, first of all, not very good-natured.. Not being good-natured doesn't meen being mean. They should be somewhat aggressive who can walk one step front even though they walk two steps back when they are crashed into a world. When someone harms me, I should defend against them throughly to protect my be-loved people. I cannot do that if I am just good-hearted. Also, second, men from thier thirties should follow their dreams, not money. From thirties, most people usually follow things considered to be realistic and lose their dreams like a memory. But, are the things really realistic? I think that the one who have both of them are good men. And, they can have responsibility.
You said that you search for the writings about yourself at a blog. Do you visit your fan cafe?
Mr. Cha: I sometimes visit there. I write down a message once a year (laughing). I will often write it down. I didn't do it because I was shy before. But, my fans like my writings. Also, it's very important to hear what my fans talk to me. Basically, they like whichever movies I am acting in... But, they sometimes say that "I like all about you...But...." That's the very focus. Their talks are much more exact and meaningful than any pointed gimlets. And, I really appreciate them. What they do wrong? A fan came to Seoul from Mock-po to see me for just about one or two minutes. And, they saw me just for a second and gave some presents to me and went back to Mock-po.
But, as a matter of fact, I also become old. I felt that Im too old when I saw myself through the mirror today. I have so many wrinkles around my eyes when I smile. People say that wrinkles of the actor is also acting. But, I don't think so. Being old is just being old (laughing).
You suddenly began to enjoy acting stylish characters after trying to act new things. Especially, "Moon", "71-into Fires" and "Athena" are called a series of movies, "Beautiful fourties of Cha, Seung-won".
Mr Cha: I want to have vigor. If people don't have vigor in their twenties, they seem to be pure. But, if people don't have vigor in their fourties, they are just shabby. I want to show vigor, like Mickey Rourke in his movie "The Wrestler." So, I've made an effort. I want to act the climax of these sorts of characters. To the peak of males in their fourties. And then, I want to act in melodramas or comedies. Of course, it will be a bit different from comedies where I was acting several years ago.
"It's difficult to do work if I consider work just as a work. I work with enjoying my hobbies...I can always meet new people through my work.. I do not say that I just have a fun, but I enjoy my work. I go with the flow. I'm acting in so many remarkable movies. But if I feel so much responsibility about it, it can become a burden. I make an effort not to consider my responsibility as a burden and not to bring it to my act. I try not to recognize this burden. I just go with the flow again. "
The word "차간지 (Chaganji) (Cha, chrisma-"간지" is a kind of Korean new word made by young generation. I think that it could be understood as "charisma.")" Ah, 차간지 차간지 (laugh) It became my nickname. I'm glad at having this nickname even though it became my nickname just these days. People are good at making new words, like "꿀벅지 (meaning the slim fleshy inside of the thigh )". But, I hate the word "미중년 (beautiful middle age)" What's that? I don't like its nuance. It's like two irrelevant words clashing with each other. I'm an male actor, not a middle-aged actor. But, it's all right to call me "아저씨 (ajoshi) (a title of middle aged men)" Its nuance is not so bad. I hate to be called "middle age." Very much (With emphasis).
