Zhang Dan, the 2006 Olympic Pair Silver medalist appeared on a show called ‘Star athletes watch the Olympics’. Together with an unnamed host they commentated on parts of the ladies free skate in real time. I have translated the parts relevant to Yuna and her free skating performance beginning from the moment she completed it.

Zhang Dan: Today’s ladies figure skating competition is truly brilliant. Kim Yuna hasn’t competed much this season, this must be her best performance (of the season). All her key moves/elements including her performance (interpretation) were flawless and though she had a tight landing on one of her jumps it didn’t affect her performance at all, really brilliant

Host: We are waiting for her scores. Do you think she should be champion?

Zhang Dan: In my heart Yuna should be today’s champion, Mao Asada 2nd and Carolina Kostner third. But this is the rankings in my heart, no one knows what the results will look like.

Host: You mentioned Asada and Kim how the moment they enter they have the command and charisma of Olympic medalists that the other competitors lack. Could you analyze for the viewer, where such differences can be seen?

Zhang Dan: The three athletes in my heart, I think during the Olympics their performance ability and their jumps were the best of tonight’s free skates; be it the jumps, performance or skating skills they are especially all rounded and complete. That is why I think they have the ability to contend for Olympic medals while other athletes such as the Russian although her score was really high as a member of the audience I do think that she is a bit young and compared to the others is still raw, her performance ability is also lacking compared to them.

Host: The scores are out and unfortunately/regrettably Kim Yuna is actually in 2nd place. From the perspective of tonight’s free skate this is a bit wasted/unfortunate.

Zhang Dan: It is indeed unfortunate/wasted, she deserves/can assume the title of champion but very unfortunately she lost to the Russian’s host competitor, the host did have some home ice advantage

Host: No matter what people say of this athlete (meaning Kim), maybe someone else will see this problem or that but her performance really was exciting. Although I’m not an expert but I feel that when she finished her routine the emotional impact she delivered and the way she touched me was far ahead of what the other athletes could summon.

Zhang Dan: No matter the result, to Kim and Asada these veteran competitors, to perform at their optimal level in a competition as significant as the Olympics, no matter the placements I think to them it was already worthwhile. As for the results probably Kim won’t be too upset, in an interview before the free skate she said that she didn’t have very high hopes but rather she wanted to perform up to her own standard, to skate a complete program. I think for them this is already an ideal ending.
